What The Marine Parade Roadworks Mean For Your Morning

The Marine Parade resurfacing starts on Monday. The short version is that if you come into town along the seafront between half past seven and nine, you want to leave ten minutes earlier than usual.

What is closed, and when

Marine Parade is down to one lane between the lido and Marine Parade Gardens, with temporary lights, from Monday 20 July.

The contractor is working nights where it can, so the worst of it should be between six and ten in the morning while the lights are still set for the overnight closure.

The harbour approach is not affected. Neither is Union Street.

The way round it

Two options, and neither is brilliant.

Millgate Road and down past the leisure centre adds about a mile but avoids the lights entirely. It is the one we would take.

The other is to stay on the ring road to the Castle Gardens roundabout and come in from the north. Longer, but far more predictable, and much better if you are heading for the north side of town anyway.

If you are going to the lido, the car park entrance stays open throughout. It is signed off the temporary layout and it is easy to miss.

Buses

The number 4 and the number 11 both divert via Millgate Road for the duration and will not serve the two seafront stops. The stop outside the amusements is suspended and the nearest alternative is the Bandstand.

How long

Six weeks is the figure we have been given, which takes it to the end of August. Roadworks estimates being what they are, we would not plan a wedding around it.

Weather, while we are here

Settled through the week, low twenties, with a breeze off the sea that will make it feel cooler on the front than it does inland. Rain arrives Thursday night and clears by Friday lunchtime.
