The Quay Lights Add A Second Corn Exchange Date

The first night sold out in under two hours, so there is now a Saturday as well. The band turned down a bigger room out of town to do it.

The Quay Lights Add A Second Corn Exchange Date

The Quay Lights have put a second night on sale at the Corn Exchange after the first sold out in under two hours on Friday.

The band grew out of a covers residency at the Old Wharf about six years ago. They finished their second album in the spring and have been playing it in fragments at festivals all summer. These are the first shows where they play the whole thing, in order.

The dates

The original night is Friday 16 October. The added night is Saturday 17 October, same doors, same support.

Tickets went on general sale this morning through the Corn Exchange box office. At the time of writing there were still some left for the Saturday. We are not a ticket agent and we do not take a cut.

Why two nights and not a bigger room

We asked. Fen Okereke, who sings and plays guitar, said the band had been offered a larger venue out of town and turned it down, on the grounds that half the point of the record is that it was made here and people should not have to drive forty minutes to hear it.

That decision costs them money, and it is worth saying so.

What the record sounds like

Broader than the first one. There is more room in it, the guitars are quieter, and there are two songs that are mostly piano, which will surprise anybody who only knows the early singles.

Low Season has been on our playlist since July and is sitting at number four on the Northgate Hits chart this week.

Isla Bream, who drums, told us the album took eighteen months because they kept going back to it between shifts. Three of the four have day jobs and none of them plans to give one up.

If you cannot get in

Both nights are being recorded and the band say they will put a live version out afterwards.

We are also broadcasting a session with them the week before, on the Friday evening show, and we will take requests for it.
