Mellow Nights Is Getting An Extra Hour

From Monday, Mellow Nights starts at nine instead of ten and runs through to one.

Elin has been making the case for this since the spring, on the grounds that the ten o'clock start meant the show never had room to settle before the first hour was gone. She is right, and we should have done it sooner.

What moves

The evening request hour moves forward to eight, so requests now sit between the teatime show and Mellow Nights rather than cutting across it. Nothing else in the weekday schedule changes.

Overnight is unaffected. Marcus still starts at one and still finishes at six, and still declines to explain why he prefers it.

What the extra hour is for

Longer records, mostly. The first hour of the new show is being built around full album sides and pieces that do not fit a three minute slot, which is not something we can do anywhere else in the schedule.

There will also be a weekly slot where a listener picks a whole hour. That starts in October and we will explain how to put yourself forward nearer the time.

Requests

Still open, still by message or by phone, still read out by a person rather than fed through anything automated. The line opens at seven.

We do ask that a request comes with a sentence about why, because the why is usually more interesting than the record.

The schedule page has the whole thing laid out day by day and it updates itself, so it will be right before Monday even if this article is not.

If you listen at that time of night and the change spoils something for you, tell us. We would rather hear it now than in six months.
